Andrew Verity
Exclusive Agent
Andy Verity is the award-winning Economics Correspondent for BBC News, covering finance and business on BBC Radio and TV as well as reporting for Panorama, BBC Newsnight and BBC Radio 4’s investigative strand, File on Four. A Presenter of early morning business and financial news on BBC Radio 4 and Radio Five Live, Andy can be heard on the Today programme, Radio Four’s Six O’clock News and the BBC News TV channel reporting on the worst inflation in 40 years, recessionary pressures and the tightest jobs market since the 1960s.
Joining the BBC from The Independent, Andy worked first as Personal Finance Correspondent where he won awards including Personal Finance Journalist of the year and Personal Finance Broadcaster of the year. He then moved into presenting business and financial news on BBC Radio 5 Live, where for 8 years he hosted the BBC’s daily financial radio programme and popular podcast Wake up to Money.
Before the credit crunch struck in 2007 he proposed a TV series warning of the risks of an imminent crash in the housing market which became BBC2’s The Truth About Property. Attracting an unusually large audience; it was repeat-commissioned both before and after the crisis of 2008.
After a spell at Newsnight he was appointed as the BBC’s Economics Correspondent in 2014, where he’s covered the economic effects of Brexit, the pandemic and now the post-pandemic inflation aggravated by the Ukraine War. For Panorama he’s presented high-impact investigative stories including a film which revealed the Bank of England’s role in the Libor interest rate rigging scandal. That was later followed up with a 2022 BBC Radio 4 investigative podcast series, The Lowball Tapes, which exposed evidence of an establishment cover-up of a huge fraud during the financial crisis and questioned the safety of convictions of traders prosecuted and jailed for interest rate ‘rigging’. It was shortlisted for the British Journalism Awards and the Foreign Press Association awards and a book on the scandal will be published soon.
In a 2018 documentary exposing money laundering in London by a Ukrainian gangster, Andy made headlines when one of the gangster’s thugs kicked him in the groin. In a more recent film, Following the Drug Money, Andy exposed how global consultants EY covered up evidence of smuggling by an organised crime gang that was laundering the proceeds of sales of illegal drugs in the UK via the gold markets of Dubai.
A well-known figure in the business world, Andy is a highly accomplished Moderator and Event Host for conferences and events drawing on his business, economic and financial expertise.
He lives in Buckinghamshire with his wife and daughter.
